1. John Lennon
John Lennon, a 40-year-old rock icon and member of the Beatles, was shot five times in the back outside his Manhattan apartment building on December 8, 1980, by Mark David Chapman, a former Beatles fan. Lennon had eerily predicted his own death. The Independent claims that Chapman has offered a variety of contradictory explanations for why he killed Lennon, including his desire for recognition and his religious convictions.
2. Rebecca Schaeffer
Even though the comedy “My Sister Sam” only had a two-year run, Rebecca Schaeffer, who played the show’s breakout star, was on the verge of breaking out in Hollywood.
All of that changed on July 18, 1989, when the 21-year-old was fatally shot in the doorway of her Hollywood house by a stalker who had been fixated on her for three years, Robert John Bardo (per the Los Angeles Times).
Bardo wrote her letters repeatedly, but his obsession turned sinister when he hired a private detective to use the California Department of Motor Vehicles to locate her location.
3. Gianni Versace
Legendary fashion mogul Gianni Versace was shot twice in the back of the head by spree killer Andrew Cunanan on July 15, 1997, as he was returning to his Miami mansion from a coffee delivery (via Time). He was fifty years of age. Vanity Fair reported that 27-year-old Cunanan boasted that the two were pals and claimed to have met the fashion icon in 1990.
4. Christina Grimmie
Christina Grimmie, a singer, had a promising career at the early age of 22. Grimmie was poised to dominate the music business with two studio albums under her belt and a third-place finish on “The Voice.” All of that hope was dashed on June 10, 2016, when devoted follower Kevin Loibl fatally shot her four times at a meet-and-greet after an Orlando performance.
5. Dimebag Darrell
Legendary Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell was playing with his new band, Damageplan, at a bar in Columbus, Ohio, on December 8, 2004. A fan named Nathan Gale allegedly stormed the stage during the band’s opening song while yelling, “You broke up Pantera!” Tragic events ensued.
The rock god was then shot in the cranium (source: New York Daily News). Darrell wasn’t even 38. Then, before being slain by a police officer, Gale shot and killed a bouncer, two concertgoers, and also held a hostage.
6. Selena Quintanilla-Pérez
With the publication of her first English-language album, 1995’s “Dreaming of You,” Latina singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez (also known as “Selena”), who was already regarded as the “Queen of Tejano music, was poised to make the transition into pop superstardom.
Sadly, she wouldn’t survive to witness its colossal success. Selena was lured to a Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi, Texas, on March 31, 1995, where she was shot and killed by Yolanda Saldivar, the head of her fan group (via The New York Times). She wasn’t even 24.
7. Andres Escobar
Sports mistakes occur frequently, but Andres Escobar of Colombia paid the price for his with his life. On June 23, 1994, Colombia, which was heavily favoured to win the World Cup, fell to the United States in a stunning 2-1 upset after Escobar accidentally put the ball in his own goal while trying to block a shot.
Escobar was out with friends at Restaurante el Indio in Medellin ten days after the match when three people started yelling insults at him. The situation quickly descended into deadly violence.
Jorge Arango, a witness, said, “All of a sudden, we heard gunfire, and then Escobar was on the ground, groaning and clutching his chest.” Escobar was shot 12 times and perished 45 minutes later. Just 27 years old, he was.
