Carolyn Bertozzi was born into a family of academics, her father William Bertozzi is a professor of physics at MIT, and also founded and developed the Bates Linear Accelerator Center, where he served as Head of Research Operations. Her mother’s name was Norma Bertozzi and she has two sisters, one of whom, Andrea Bertozzi, is on the mathematics faculty at UCLA.

Bertozzi earned her PhD in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1993, working with Mark Bednarski on the chemical synthesis of oligosaccharide analogues. While at Berkeley, she found that viruses may bind to carbohydrates in the body. The discovery led her to her current field of study, glycobiology. Bednarski received a colon cancer diagnosis during Bertozzi’s third year of graduate school, forcing him to take a leave of absence and alter his career path by enrolling in medical school. Bertozzi and the rest of the lab were left to finish their PhD work without direct supervision.

After receiving her PhD from Berkeley, Bertozzi worked as a postdoctoral associate with Steven Rosen at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), where she examined the activity of endothelium oligosaccharides in enhancing cell adhesion at inflammatory locations. Bertozzi was able to change the protein and sugar molecules in the walls of living cells so that the cells would accept foreign objects like implants while collaborating with Rosen at UCSF.

Bertozzi started teaching at Berkeley in 1996. She has been an HHMI investigator since 2000. She developed the discipline of bioorthogonal chemistry in 1999, while working at HHMI and Berkeley, and coined the phrase in 2003.  Researchers are now able to chemically alter molecules in living things without disrupting cellular functions thanks to new research and techniques. In order to join the ChEM-H Institute, Bertozzi relocated to Stanford University in 2015.

Bertozzi focuses on the glycobiology of chronic illnesses like tuberculosis, inflammatory diseases like arthritis, and infectious diseases like cancer.
