'Warrior Nun' Creator Says the Show Will Return After Fan Outcry

Warrior Nun fans prayed for another season of the sapphic fantasy series, and providence answered — or at least the television industry did. After being unceremoniously canceled by Netflix last December, Warrior Nun will return for a much-anticipated third season, showrunner Simon Barry confirmed on Twitter this week.

“Today I’m happy to officially report that because of your combined voices, passion and amazing efforts - Warrior Nun will return and is going to be more EPIC than you could imagine,” Barry tweeted. “Thank-you!!”

The fan-led efforts he referenced included a #SaveWarriorNun hashtag campaign and a Change.org petition asking Netflix to renew the show. The latter garnered signatures from more than 123,000 viewers, who cited the show’s “interesting plot” and “extremely important” representation of LGBTQ+ people, people of color, and badass women.

Barry’s announcement didn’t offer many specifics about Warrior Nun’s renewal. At the time of writing, it’s unclear whether season 3 will return to Netflix or live on a different streamer.

Based on the Warrior Nun Areala comic book series by Ben Dunn, the series follows an orphaned young woman named Ava (Alba Baptista). She wakes up in a morgue and is quickly drafted into the Order of the Cruciform Sword, a sect of nuns who protect the world from demons, of which there are many. Over the course of the show’s two seasons, LGBTQ+ fans grew especially invested in Ava’s slowly blossoming romance with Sister Beatrice (Kristina Tonteri-Young).
