Reddit user says ‘I told my entitled husband to send our child to her abusive mother’

The OP knew she couldn’t have children due to a medical condition and she had been aware of the issue since she was young so she never let it bother her.

But, she absolutely adores her husband‘s daughter from his previous relationship. The OP and her husband have been married for three years.

The OP grew close to her husband’s 7-year-old daughter and they thoroughly enjoy each other’s company. She also admires her husband for establishing that his daughter would always be his priority. The wife didn’t mind taking care of her husband’s daughter as she didn’t want the child to end up with her biological mother with drinking issues.

The OP and her husband were fine until one day the little girl fractured her arm during a football game. The husband became extremely worried and his wife told him not to stress himself over his daughter’s injury as it is bound to happen in children who are growing up, but he instead snapped at her as if it was her fault.

It didn’t stop with him throwing temper tantrums at his wife but he also said he would never want to be like his wife’s father which stung the OP but she let it slide.

Hereon, the husband only became more critical of his wife’s parenting method. The OP even got an earful for spending a “girl’s weekend” with her husband’s daughter while he was on a business trip.

An infuriated wife on being questioned about being a “better mother” tells her husband to leave his daughter with his drunk ex, even though she hated the thought of being separated from her.

The OP realizes her husband was being influenced by his mom

After the huge argument following the girl’s weekend, the OP realized that her husband’s strange behavior wasn’t driven by infidelity, but by his own mother, who was feeding things into his head.

The mother-in-law didn’t like the OP since day one and the latter was only oblivious to how deep it ran. The OP’s mother-in-law would accuse her of being with her son only for his money and not being of their “level”, even though she earned more than her husband.

The OP kept her guard on and didn’t mind her mother-in-law calling her name behind her back, but the snarky remarks were only the tip of the iceberg. The OP got to know later that she never thought her daughter-in-law could make a good mother for her grandchild and made her feelings about it obvious at every given instance.

The mother-in-law wouldn’t encourage her granddaughter to call the OP her “mom”. She would rather have her address her mother by her name.

The mother-in-law also found issues with watching her own granddaughter when the OP was held up with her projects despite working from home.

The OP didn’t want to let her mother-in-law sabotage her marriage so she tried to have a decent conversation with her husband, which only blew up into a horrible argument and ended with him asking for a divorce.

The OP feels betrayed because she wouldn’t have entered the marriage with her husband had she known how her mother-in-law felt about her from the start. The wife says she was “lied to” and is more disappointed with her husband for not talking about his mother’s opinion of her daughter-in-law even after being married for three years.

Users slam the ‘toxic’ mother-in-law

Reddit users are furious with the OP’s mother-in-law for trying to sabotage her son’s marriage. They are urging the OP to file for a divorce and go about her life.

One user said: “This is actually worse? Mil not liking her doesn’t matter. Husband acting the way he did when he knows MIL hates her is a huge problem”

“Talk to a lawyer first. Then confront him to get rid of his mom or you leave,” said another.

A third user said: “That MIL is so toxic and if I were OP I’d go low or no contact.”
